Bridging Generations: The Power of Integrational Learning

07 March 2025

At Coomera Anglican College, the iGen programme embodies a philosophy of learning, community engagement, and personal growth that often has profound significance for those involved.

At its core, the iGen programme re-frames and complements traditional communication and relationships in family and community groups by providing opportunities to share perspectives and wisdom about the changes in people’s lives, and through non-judgmental communication, builds knowledge, empathy and deep understanding which might not otherwise have been possible. It surpasses conventional educational paradigms, aiming not only to enhance academic outcomes but also to nurture the holistic development of students and elders alike. Drawing from extensive research and collaboration with partners such as Intergenerational Learning Australia, aged care organisations, and government departments, the programme emerges as a pioneering force in educational practice.

Central to the iGen initiative is its integration within our Service-Learning curriculum, providing students in Years 8 and 9 with authentic, real-world experiences. Partnering with two aged care centers and Home Aged Care Residents through Anglicare, students and elders are on a journey of appreciation, respect, and mutual support. Through meaningful interactions with elders, they not only contribute to the community but also undergo profound personal and academic transformations.

The impact of the iGen programme resonates across multiple dimensions. Students emerge with sharpened conversation skills, heightened inquiry-based learning abilities, enriched vocabulary, and refined communication prowess. Beyond the confines of the classroom, they cultivate empathy, resilience, and a deep appreciation for the value of intergenerational connections.

“I loved how I was able to talk to new people with interesting stories and remarkable personalities who over time I became to think of as friends and lovely people who were funny, fun to be around, kind and caring. Intergenerational activities gave me the opportunity to learn and be inspired by the past generation … and we got to play fun games with them like musical statues or share hobbies like sports or art and music. These reasons are why iGen is an amazing programme and should be done throughout the world.”"

Lachlan, Year 8

The iGen programme embodies the essence of quality engagement. Each interaction, whether online or in person, is imbued with intentionality and authenticity. Students are encouraged to foster lasting relationships with their “grand friends,” spending meaningful time together to deepen understanding and forge bonds regardless of generational divides. The success of the iGen programme is not confined to the realm of academia; it resonates profoundly within the hearts and lives of elders. Through regular feedback mechanisms and stakeholder consultations, we witness firsthand the power of human connection. Our “grand-friends” have shared that they feel less loneliness and isolation, and feel a newfound sense of purpose, companionship, and joy. As we navigate an increasingly complex and fragmented world, initiatives like iGen serve as guiding lights, illuminating the path towards a more compassionate and interconnected society. In bridging the gap between generations, we discover not only the richness of shared experiences but also the boundless potential for growth and renewal.
