The Coomera Anglican College Basketball Club recently experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as they to welcomed Coach Andre Chevalier to their training sessions.
Coach Chevalier, the Head Coach of Boys Basketball at Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles, California, USA, has an impressive resume working with future NBA stars, including the sons of basketball legends like LeBron James, Scottie Pippen, and Dwyane Wade, as well as coaching current NBA players like Marvin Bagley III and Brandon Boston Jr during their time at Sierra Canyon.
For the young athletes at Coomera Anglican College, this was a rare opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business. Coach Chevalier's ability to develop young players and prepare them for the pressures of the game is second to none.
Referred to as the 'Head of the Snake,' Chevalier has spent six years as Head Coach of Sierra Canyon Boys Basketball - the Trailblazers who have grown immensely, have featured in their own Amazon Studios-sponsored documentary series, and have filled NBA stadiums and won three Southern Section Championship titles from 2018 to 2020.
One of the key aspects of Coach Chevalier's coaching philosophy is the importance of fundamentals. He believes that a strong foundation in the basics of basketball, such as dribbling, shooting, passing, and defence, is essential for every player, regardless of their skill level or age. During the training sessions at Coomera Anglican College, Coach Chevalier focused on honing these fundamental skills, helping the players build a solid basketball foundation that would serve them well throughout their basketball journeys.
Chevalier also emphasises the importance of teamwork, discipline, and mental toughness. He believes that basketball is a team sport, and it takes more than individual talent to be successful on the court.
Through various drills, exercises, and team-building activities, Coach Chevalier instilled in the players the values of working together as a cohesive unit, maintaining discipline and focus, and developing the mental toughness to overcome challenges and setbacks.
The opportunity to learn from Coach Chevalier was not only a valuable experience for the players at the Coomera Anglican College Basketball Club, but also for the coaching staff and parents. Chevalier's insights into player development, team dynamics, and the mental aspects of the game were invaluable, and his training sessions have left a lasting impact on everyone involved.
The Club's players will be able to carry forward the lessons learned from Coach Chevalier and apply them in their future basketball endeavors, whether it be at the College or even professional level.
