Sports engagement not only encourages lifelong learning but also builds a sense of community, enhancing motor skills, movement competence, and emotional wellbeing.

With a notable history of sporting success, our Football, Netball, and Basketball Academies provide elite training environments, partnerships, and mentorship.

Admission to these academies is merit-based, reflecting the student's ability and commitment. Applications, exclusive to current students, are processed online, aligning with our commitment to excellence in sports and education.

The Sports Academies within the College operate under a two-stream format.

Cocurricular Development:

Students are invited to take part of a development programme outside of College hours to further develop their individual skills in their chosen academy sport.

Timetabled Development:

In Years 7 - 9, the Sports Academies are offered as a timetabled subject that matches the Australian Curriculum. Students engage in an educational element, strength and conditioning and a double period for court development. For Years 10 - 12, a timetabled programme is also available in a block period. This is invitational only.

Basketball

Basketball is a sport that continues to grow in popularity and offers an expanding set of opportunities for players.

The Coomera Anglican College Basketball Academy (CACBA) began following excellent results in the APS, Northern Gold Coast Club, and Basketball Queensland’s Champion Schools competitions. The academy provides opportunity for skill and personal development for our students through a range of different pathways.

Meet Coach Frank Goldfinch

The College does operate at club-level competition through the Coomera Anglican College Basketball Club in the Northern Gold Coast Seahawks Association.

The programme has been designed to meet the needs of the participants and incorporates the overarching programme components shared by the academies.

We prepare athletes to progress through Basketball Australia pathways and connect students to additional coaching to help them to progress to elite competition.

Our Academy emphasises skills, physicality, and game sense, along with the importance of good education and mental strength. We provide mentoring and guest coaching opportunities through corporate partnerships and relationships with external sports organisations.

In 2017, Coomera Anglican College initiated a partnership with North Gold Coast Seahawks and has continued their mutual support through multiple levels of the association over the past number of years. Coomera Anglican College is the naming rights sponsors to the Junior Seahawks representative program.

Our College is focused on junior player development, and supports pathways for players through the introductory Basketball programs, to the Queensland State League, and hopefully beyond.

Netball

The Netball Academy at Coomera Anglican College provides an opportunity for College athletes and coaches to continue developing their netball skills and knowledge.

Academy athletes train towards APS, NQ Vicki Wilson, and Queensland Independent Secondary School Netball (QISSN) competitions. These competitions allow the College to compete against other schools within the state. Placing high in these competitions secures Coomera Anglican College as a prestigious Netball College.

In 2022, the Gold Coast Titans announced their new Netball Academy, and Coomera Anglican College came on board immediately as a sponsor and host of their training programme. Working closely with Gold Coast Titan’s Netball, we aim to provide pathways for emerging players, make connections, and learn from a wide range of coaches.

Coomera Anglican College operates club-level competition through the Coomera Anglican College Netball Club as part of NCGA

The Coomera Anglican College Netball Academy emphasis is to advance skills, physicality, and game sense, along with creating a well-educated, mentally strong athlete.  The Netball Academy programme has been carefully designed to meet the needs of the participant and will incorporate the following key components:

  • Technical ability and skill acquisition sessions
  • Tactical knowledge and execution
  • Strength and Conditioning
  • Player wellbeing programmes

Football

The Coomera Anglican College Football Academy (Incorporating Futsal) aims to provide students from Year 4 to 12 with the opportunity to participate in a developmental football programme, and for those with identified football talent, provide additional coaching to enable them to achieve their best with the aim of competing at an elite level.

The Coomera Anglican College Football Academy will undertake a comprehensive football development programme under the auspices of the Gold Coast Football Academy (GCFA).

Coordinator of Football

Meet Coach Andy Callaghan

The programme will consist of both Football and Futsal related facets relating to tactical, technical, physical, and psychological techniques and aspects and will form the essential guide for player development.  This model will provide the best opportunity to learn multiple facets of the game on individual, unit team and squad levels. It will assist players greatly to improve at all levels and to be prepared for trials at National Premier League Academy levels as set out by Football Australia’s “Whole of life” Football plan.

Football Programme

This elite College based programme and training environment is created to encourage the very best performances of all players through exposure to specialised coaching in all academy components. The Gold Coast Football Academy (GCFA) player development model has been proven to advance the skills of those players that enter and stay with the programme.

The GCFA has a world-renowned reputation for accessing player trials at clubs in the UK and in Australia.  They also have access to numerous USA College programmes where football scholarships are available, and have connections in China where they have delivered their programme.  GCFA squads have played against quality opposition including Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Sampdoria of Italy.

Futsal programme

Futsal is the indoor version of football and has formed the basis of every great player’s technical ability.  From Brazil to Africa, Europe and Asia futsal plays an important part in the development of all players.  On a smaller court and inside where the weather does not interfere with play, players must think quicker and be smarter.

Their technical prowess and decision-making processes will be honed in this environment. The Futsal programme is incorporated within the operations of the Coomera Anglican College Football Academy and the Gold Coast Futsal Academy and will make use of the first-class facilities at our Rod Lane Sports Centre.

The Gold Coast Futsal Academy is also affiliated with the Australian Futsal Association – with some 84 countries worldwide, including Brazil, Gol Brazil – recognised as the preeminent Futsal organisation in the world, and RCD Espanyol of the Spanish Primera League.
